HCC Weekends Away
Our very first Weekend Away took place in a youth hostel in Suffolk. We discovered we could book a whole youth hostel out of season at a reasonable cost. In the following years we've tried different hostels in various locations including Kent. As well as youth hostels we have also booked conference centres, which have the added attraction of on-site activities such as high ropes and kayaking. We have tended to have a weekend away every two years.
The purposes of our church weekends away are to build a great sense of family and belonging; to spend time together and have fun; to have the opportunity to hear from God and minister to each other in a relaxed setting.
During the weekend, we always eat together and if we are self-catering, we share out the various duties like food preparation and washing up. Serving each other in this way is part of our worship as well as being another great way to fellowship. Some highlights over the years have been cabaret evenings, cycling trips and tobogganing down a dry ski slope!
Church Weekend Away 2023
We returned to the lovely Ringsfield Hall in Suffolk for our 2023 Weekend Away. The weather was superb and we had a great time together, enjoying the beautiful surroundings around Ringsfield. Our guest speaker Phil gave us plenty to reflect upon in his Bible teaching sessions and the children and young people had an amazing time with Jess, Sam, Tanya and Steve. Other highlights include a trip to the seaside, a long bike ride for the keen cyclists and a fun Quiz on the Saturday evening.
Church Weekend Away 2024
We spent our Weekend Away 2024 at a Rock UK centre called Carroty Wood, situated near Tonbridge in Kent. We all stayed in an accommodation block called Hornbeam House - it was in a lovely spot with its own outdoor space and surrounded by ancient woodland. All the bedrooms had ensuite facilities (a luxury compared to some of the places we've stayed at in the past!)
On Saturday and Sunday morning we enjoyed longer times of worshipping God together with music and song. This was followed by excellent teaching and discussion sessions led by our guest speakers Ally and Guy Bevir. The younger children had their own sessions which included crafts and activities outside.
On Saturday afternoon, some of us ventured into Tonbridge for a walk and a coffee. Others had fun in the Carroty Wood indoor swimming pool. Highlights of Saturday evening were a barbecue and a few fun games.
There were 29 of us in all, ranging from 4 months old to 70, but we were all one big family enjoying each other's company for the weekend.
